FEATURES: Market analysis on insecticide market in China – chlorantraniliprole and thiamethoxam perform quite well 08-01-2016

*CCM is attending AgriBusiness Global Trade Summit at Booth#24 in August 17-19 in Orlando, Florida, U.S.A. To better prepare for the Trade Summit, CCM is presenting a series of feature reports of China agrochemical market.

The structure of China agrochemicals market is not different from that of the globe. In China, herbicides capture the most market share of the whole agrochemical market, up to 37.4% in 2014, followed by insecticide, 26.7% and fungicide 25.5%.

With the changeable markets and policies all around the world, different kinds of agrochemicals have come and gone in recent years. In the coming days, CCM would analyze orderly on the market and tendency of fungicides, insecticides and herbicides, about the performance, growth and market share of different products.

The insecticide market was quite sluggish in 2014 compared to previous years, thus, all the pesticide enterprises were trying hard to capture more market share. Products of multinational corporations enjoyed overwhelming advantages and performed much better than the Chinese insecticide products. The active ingredients, such as chlorantraniliprole, thiamethoxam, flubendiamide and abamectin, are very popular in the insecticide market.

Chlorantraniliprole

Chlorantraniliprole, the most innovative insecticide in the past ten years, is well recognized due to its wide range of applications and effective prevention and control since it entered the market in 2008.

The global sales value of chlorantraniliprole reached over USD200 million in 2009, almost USD400 million in 2010, over USD700 million in 2012 and even USD1.24 billion in 2013. With such a growth in sales value, chlorantraniliprole edged out thiamethoxam and imidacloprid to be the top 1 in global sales value.

Since chlorantraniliprole got registered in China in 2001, it performed quite well in the market. Currently, there are 8 brands contained chlorantraniliprole, including Coragen, Prevathon, Altacor from Dupont, Virtako, Voliam Targo, Ampligo from Syngenta and Ferterra from Taiwan Xingnong Co., Ltd.

In fact, the consumption of Dupont’s insecticide products reached a peak in 2013 while that of Syngenta remained steady and fell a little. Both Coragen and Virtako sold over RMB100 million and few products could compete with them.

Thiamethoxam

Thiamethoxam, found by former Novartis AG in 1991, is mainly produced by Syngenta now. Compared with the first-generation novel nicotinamide insecticide, thiamethoxam has a wider insecticidal spectrum and higher biological activity, which makes thiamethoxam the best product in the second-generation novel nicotinamide compound chemicals.

Entering the market in 1997, thiamethoxam grew fast in its sales value. In 2008, the global sales value of thiamethoxam soared to USD729 million, up 60.2% year on year, a peak for thiamethoxam development.

In 2011, the global sales value even reached USD1.07 billion, accounting for over 36.5% of that of all the novel nicotinamide insecticide. The CAGR of the sales value of thiamethoxam was 22.2% in 2003-2011.

In 2013, European Food Safety Authority decided to limit the application of thiamethoxam, which slightly impacted on the sales value of thiamethoxam.

In China, thiamethoxam plays a vital role in both field spraying and seed treatment and grew fast in sales value in the past two years.

In 12 July 2012, Liaoning Huludao Lingyun Group of Pesticides Chemical Co., Ltd. registered thiamethoxam 98% technical for the first time in China. Till now, over 55 enterprises have registered this product. It could be imagined that there would be a more and more intense competition in China’s thiamethoxam market.
